En las plantas vasculares sin semillas, el esporofito es la generación más larga, más grande y frondosa. Esta tendencia de dominio de esporófitos a lo largo de la línea de tiempo evolutiva de las plantas conduce a gametofitos continuamente más pequeños y menos complejos. Rara vez se ven gametofitos de este grupo. Son pequeños y taloides.
En Lycopodium, el gametofito crece a partir de una homospora y es bisexual, produciendo tanto anteridios como archegonia.

Morfología de esporofitos
Los esporofitos se ramifican dicótomamente y tienen raíces y hojas verdaderas debido a la presencia de tejido vascular lignificado. Las hojas, llamadas microfílicas, tienen una sola vena de tejido vascular no ramificada. Nota: El término microfilo, confusamente, no es una indicación del tamaño de la hoja.

La proposición asexual puede ocurrir a través de un tallo subterráneo llamado rizoma. Las homosporas se producen en una estructura llamada estrobilo que se produce al final de una rama. Una sola planta puede tener muchos estrobili.
