    Si la tasa de crecimiento es demasiado rápida en comparación con esa retroalimentación, las poblaciones pueden sobrepasar su capacidad de carga, lo que puede conducir a resultados altamente complejos. Los retrasos en la detección de la capacidad de carga pueden iniciar oscilaciones. Por ejemplo, una población de insectos modelada que crece y pone huevos un año y emerge al año siguiente puede sufrir tales oscilaciones. Los insectos están, en efecto, “manteniendo los ojos cerrados” sobre cuántos insectos se producirán el próximo año. Esto contrasta con especies como bacterias o humanos, donde la población crece más o menos continuamente.
