Afortunadamente, el progreso en su comprensión viene pieza por pieza. Las redes alimenticias complejas, como la ilustrada en la figura, pueden examinarse en “motivos” más simples.
Se ha visto en capítulos anteriores que hay dos motivos para una sola Especie: logístico y ortólogo, con crecimiento exponencial formando una fina línea divisoria entre ellos. Y
en el capítulo anterior, viste tres motivos para dos especies: la depredación, la competencia y el mutualismo.
Posteriormente verás que hay exactamente cuarenta motivos distintos de tres especies, una de las cuales son dos presas perseguidas por un depredador. A esto se le llama “competencia aparente”
porque tiene propiedades de competencia.
