En esta sección sobre Patogénesis Bacteriana, estamos analizando factores de virulencia bacteriana que pueden influir en su capacidad de causar enfermedades infecciosas. Los factores de virulencia son moléculas expresadas y secretadas por las que les permiten colonizar al huésped, evadir o inhibir las respuestas inmunitarias del huésped, entrar o salir de una célula hospedadora, y/u obtener nutrición del huésped. Estos factores de virulencia se dividirán en dos categorías:

Los siguientes son factores de virulencia que promueven la colonización bacteriana del huésped.
- La capacidad de utilizar la motilidad y otros medios para contactar con las células hospedadoras y diseminarse dentro de un hospedador.
- La capacidad de adherirse a las células hospedadoras y resistir la eliminación física.
- La capacidad de invadir células hospedadoras.
- La capacidad de competir por el hierro y otros nutrientes.
- La capacidad de resistir defensas inmunitarias innatas como la fagocitosis y el complemento.
- La capacidad de evadir las defensas inmunitarias adaptativas.
Como se mencionó en la sección anterior, la mayoría de los factores de virulencia que mejor permiten a las bacterias colonizar el cuerpo son los productos de los genes sensores de quórum. También se verá que las bacterias a menudo llevan a cabo estas habilidades cooptando la maquinaria de la célula huésped y la capacidad de comunicación. Muchas bacterias son capaces de producir maquinaria de secreción especializada que permite a la bacteria inyectar proteínas en la célula huésped que reprograman varios aspectos de la maquinaria de la célula huésped para beneficiar a la bacteria.
