    Los fotoautótrofos utilizan la luz solar como fuente de energía y a través del proceso de fotosíntesis, reducen el dióxido de carbono para formar carbohidratos como la glucosa. La energía radiante se convierte en la energía de enlace químico dentro de la glucosa y otras moléculas orgánicas. Las plantas, algas y cianobacterias son conocidas como fotoautótrofos oxigénicos porque sintetizan moléculas orgánicas a partir de materiales inorgánicos, convierten la energía de la luz en energía química, usan el agua como fuente de electrones y generan oxígeno como producto final de la fotosíntesis. La reacción general para la fotosíntesis es la siguiente:

    \[ 6 CO_2 + 12 H_2O \xrightarrow[\text{light}]{\text{chlorophyll}} C_6H_{12}O_6 + 6 O_2 + 6 H_2O\]

    Tenga en cuenta que la fotosíntesis es una reacción redox con dióxido de carbono (\(CO_2\)) reducido para producir glucosa (\(C_6H_{12}O_6\)) y agua (\(H_2O\)) oxidada para producir oxígeno (\(O_2\)). La fotosíntesis se compone de dos etapas: las reacciones dependientes de la luz y las reacciones independientes de la luz.
