La microbiología industrial es una rama de la biotecnología que aplica las ciencias microbianas para crear productos industriales en cantidades masivas. Existen múltiples formas de manipular un microorganismo para aumentar los rendimientos máximos del producto. La introducción de mutaciones en un organismo muchas se logran introduciéndolas en mutágenos. La aplicación médica a la microbiología industrial es la producción de nuevos fármacos sintetizados en un organismo específico con fines médicos
