    Estados Unidos a principios del siglo XIX era una nación joven que buscaba su lugar en el mundo. La dominación federalista del gobierno había terminado, ya que Thomas Jefferson y su nuevo partido, los republicanos, llegaron al poder. Creían en un gobierno federal limitado con más control en manos de los estados y del pueblo. Sin embargo, los acontecimientos demostrarían la necesidad de equilibrio entre las dos visiones diferentes de cómo se debe gobernar a los Estados Unidos. Durante su presidencia, Jefferson, y luego James Madison, enfrentó el reto de tratar de proteger al país de las consecuencias de las Guerras Napoleónicas. A pesar de que Estados Unidos no estuvo directamente involucrado, los estadounidenses a menudo sintieron el impacto de los gigantes europeos batalladores. Estas dificultades conducirían a otra guerra.

    La Guerra de 1812 ayudó a Estados Unidos a ganar respeto internacional así como a lanzar la carrera política de Andrew Jackson. Jackson fue un vencedor en la guerra; el Partido Federalista y los indios no fueron tan afortunados. A medida que América crecía en todo el continente, los indios estaban cada vez más en el camino de la expansión sin ningún lugar adónde ir. La guerra y los acontecimientos que la llevaron a ella alteraron drásticamente la economía estadounidense de una que depende de las importaciones y exportaciones a una centrada aquí en casa en la Revolución del Mercado. La Revolución del Algodón sería un gran paso en la industrialización de Nueva Inglaterra y un cambio importante en la forma en que se fabricaban los bienes en Estados Unidos.
