El movimiento expansionista en Estados Unidos cobró un tremendo impulso en la década de 1840. El movimiento, acuñado como “destino manifiesto” a mediados de la década de 1840, justificó la expansión con un sentido de misión y propósito, viendo la expansión estadounidense como inevitable, justa y divinamente preordenada. Esta expansión llevó a la incorporación de Texas y Oregón a la Unión y fue una causa subyacente de guerra con México, lo que resultó en la adquisición de vastos territorios en el suroeste, incluido el premio de California.
No obstante, la expansión llegó a un precio. La Guerra México-Americana incitó aún más al resentimiento hacia Estados Unidos no sólo por parte de México, sino también de la región de América Latina. A raíz de la guerra, las tensiones crecieron entre las poblaciones estadounidense y mexicana de Texas y California a medida que los hispanos fueron empujados cada vez más fuera de la sociedad dominante, desposeídos de sus tierras y políticamente desposeídos en los nuevos estados de Texas y California. La expansión hacia el oeste también condujo al aumento de las hostilidades entre Estados Unidos y los nativos americanos, lo que resultó en una serie de disturbios, masacres y guerras. Por último, el movimiento expansionista encendió aún más el debate sobre la esclavitud a raíz del Compromiso de Missouri.
- 14.1: Expansión hacia el Oeste y Destino Manifiesto
- Los estadounidenses abrazaron cada vez más el concepto de Destino Manifiesto en los años 1840. El Destino Manifiesto se asoció no solo con la expansión de tierras, sino también con la idea de americanización de indios y mexicanos residentes de áreas como Texas, Oregón y California. Además, muchos estadounidenses compararon la idea de la extensión física de las fronteras de Estados Unidos con la difusión de la libertad. El debate sobre el expansionismo no fue sencillo.
