Fue su libro, Exploring Elementary Mathematics: A Small-Group Approach for Teaching, el que me inspiró a enseñar usando el enfoque de grupos pequeños y, finalmente, a escribir mi propio libro. Fue pionero en el enfoque colaborativo para enseñar matemáticas a futuros maestros de primaria. En su enfoque, los estudiantes trabajaron cooperativamente mientras aprendían juntos en pequeños grupos utilizando manipuladores para comprender los conceptos. A diferencia de la mayoría de las carreras de matemáticas, tomé la secuencia de matemáticas de dos cursos diseñada para futuros maestros de primaria (porque parecía divertida e interesante, no porque fuera un requisito). De hecho, utilicé el libro del Dr. Weissglass cuando tomé las clases en la U.C.S.B. a fines de la década de 1970 como licenciatura. Muchas de las ideas y ejercicios en mis módulos surgieron de los presentados en su libro. Ha sido amable al animarme a seguir escribiendo mis propios módulos. Le debo una deuda de gratitud.
Agradezco a la Junta de Gobierno del Colegio MiraCosta el otorgamiento de la licencia sabática que me permitió iniciar el proyecto a largo plazo de escribir este libro. También agradezco a mis muchos colegas que apoyaron mi decisión de tomarme un tiempo libre de la enseñanza para poder trabajar en este libro.
Muchos estudiantes a lo largo de los años me animaron (incluso suplicaron) a escribir mi propio libro — y ahora que he comenzado, ¡continuamente me han pedido que lo termine! Me siento particularmente endeudado con aquellos estudiantes que me ayudan a mejorar este libro ya que inadvertidamente lo editan encontrando errores tipográficos y otros errores, y dan sugerencias de mejora. ¡Su paciencia al estar entre los primeros en usarlo, en su forma no tan pulida, es muy apreciada!
