La producción es las diversas formas de transformación de las materias primas de la naturaleza en una forma más adecuada para el uso humano. La distribución es el transporte de bienes producidos ya sea por tierra, aire o mar al consumidor. El consumo es la compra o uso de un bien, alimento, material o servicio que haya sido previamente producido y distribuido. En esta sección se discuten aspectos específicos de las diferentes estrategias para estos conceptos que se han utilizado a lo largo del tiempo y que continúan siendo utilizados en diferentes culturas a nivel mundial.
