La religión es una de las instituciones socioculturales más complejas y generalizadas. También es universal. Todas las culturas y sociedades a lo largo del tiempo han tenido creencias y cosmovisiones que pueden clasificarse como religiosas por naturaleza, incluso dentro de instituciones políticas que son areligiosas o avow ateísmo. Investigaciones innovadoras también indican que los primates, especialmente la especie humana, han evolucionado física, social y emocionalmente hacia un sentido de espiritualidad y religiosidad (ver King 2007).
