Para los humanos, la pertenencia al grupo promueve la supervivencia, la motivación y el sentido de sí mismo.
A través del proceso de enculturación, aprendemos quién pertenece a nuestro grupo (in-group) y quién no pertenece (out-group). El compromiso con nuestros grupos puede ser positivo y enriquecedor o destructivo, lo que resulta en infrahumanización, estereotipos negativos y discriminación. Somos individuos, con personalidades, motivaciones y deseos únicos pero la cultura influye en nuestra membresía grupal y nuestra identidad social.
