Los psicólogos prueban preguntas de investigación utilizando una variedad de métodos. La mayor parte de la investigación se basa en correlaciones o experimentos. Con correlaciones, los investigadores miden las variables tal como ocurren naturalmente en las personas y computan el grado en que dos variables van juntas. Con experimentos, los investigadores realizan activamente cambios en una variable y están atentos a cambios en otra variable. Los experimentos permiten a los investigadores hacer inferencias causales. Otros tipos de métodos incluyen diseños longitudinales y cuasi-experimentales. Muchos factores, entre ellos las limitaciones prácticas, determinan el tipo de metanfetamina que utilizan los investigadores. A menudo, los investigadores encuestan a las personas a pesar de que sería mejor, pero más caro y consumiría mucho tiempo, rastrearlas longitudinalmente.
