Es importante tener en cuenta que el razonamiento y la toma de decisiones están estrechamente conectados entre sí: La toma de decisiones en muchos casos ocurre con un proceso previo de razonamiento. La vida cotidiana de las personas está decididamente acuñada por la aparición sincronizada de estas dos características cognitivas humanas. Esta sincronización, a su vez, es realizada por las funciones ejecutivas que parecen estar localizadas principalmente en los lóbulos frontales del cerebro.
