La razón no es el desconocimiento de la astronomía, sino un esfuerzo deliberado por seguir un horario diferente al de cualquier otra fe.
Esto crea una situación interesante durante el mes de Ramadán, cuando se espera que los fieles musulmanes ayunen y se abstengan de beber desde el amanecer hasta el atardecer. Cuando el Ramadán cae a mediados del invierno, esto no impone grandes dificultades, ya que los días son cortos y frescos. Quince años después, sin embargo, el Ramadán cae a mediados del verano, cuando los días son largos y el calor hace que la gente tenga bastante sed. Es entonces cuando muchos en las ciudades árabes esperan con impaciencia el boom del cañón que tradicionalmente anuncia todas las noches el fin del ayuno.
