Al final de este capítulo, el alumno deberá ser capaz de:
- Reconocer y diferenciar entre términos clave.
- Aplicar diversos tipos de métodos de muestreo a la recolección de datos.

Probablemente se esté haciendo la pregunta: “¿Cuándo y dónde usaré las estadísticas?” Si lee algún periódico, ve televisión o usa Internet, verá información estadística. Hay estadísticas sobre delincuencia, deportes, educación, política e inmobiliaria. Por lo general, cuando lees un artículo de periódico o ves un programa de noticias de televisión, se te da información de muestra. Con esta información, puede tomar una decisión sobre la exactitud de una declaración, reclamo o “hecho”. Los métodos estadísticos pueden ayudarte a hacer la “conjetura mejor educada”.

Dado que sin duda se te dará información estadística en algún momento de tu vida, necesitas conocer algunas técnicas para analizar la información cuidadosamente. Piensa en comprar una casa o administrar un presupuesto. Piensa en tu profesión elegida. Los campos de la economía, los negocios, la psicología, la educación, la biología, el derecho, la informática, la ciencia policial y el desarrollo de la primera infancia requieren al menos un curso de estadística.
En este capítulo se incluyen las ideas básicas y palabras de probabilidad y estadística. Pronto entenderás que las estadísticas y la probabilidad trabajan juntas. También aprenderá cómo se recogen los datos y qué datos “buenos” se pueden distinguir de los “malos”.
