    Cuando la luz natural incide sobre una lámina retardadora ocurre lo siguiente:

    1. Como la hemos considerado completamente transparente, la intensidad se conserva.

    2. Como el desfase en cualquier par de componentes es aleatorio, la introducción de una fase extra no cambia la aleatoriedad de la diferencia de fase. No hay efecto.

    Polarizador

    Cuando la luz natural incide sobre un polarizador emerge luz linealmente polarizada:

    La última igualdad se debe a que al ser la luz natural hay la misma cantidad de luz en ambas polarizaciones, por ser el reparto entre ellas aleatorio: \(\left|E_{\|}\right|=\left|E_{\perp}\right| .\) En conclusión:
