Recuerda tu derivación (Sección 10.11) de que la inductancia de un solenoide largo es\(\mu n^2 Al\). La energía que se almacena en ella, entonces, es\(\frac{1}{2}\mu n^2 AlI^2\). El volumen del solenoide es\(Al\), y el campo magnético es\(B = \mu n I\), o\(H = n I \). Así encontramos que la energía almacenada por unidad de volumen en un campo magnético es

En un vacío, la energía almacenada por unidad de volumen en un campo magnético es\(\frac{1}{2}\mu_0H^2\) - ¡aunque el vacío esté absolutamente vacío!
La Ecuación 10.16.2 es válida en cualquier medio isotrópico, incluyendo un vacío. En un medio anisotrópico, no\(\textbf{B}\text{ and }\textbf{H}\) son en general paralelos — a menos que ambos sean paralelos a un eje cristalográfico. De manera más general, en un medio anisotrópico, la energía por unidad de volumen es\(\frac{1}{ 2} \textbf{B}\cdot \textbf{H}\).
Verificar que el producto de\(B\text{ and }H\) tenga las dimensiones de energía por unidad de volumen.
