Supongamos que el objeto en la Figura 11.1 se está moviendo; entonces los observadores en diferentes marcos de referencia medirán diferentes velocidades. Denote la velocidad del objeto en el cuadro\(S\) por\(\overrightarrow{\mathbf{v}}=d \overrightarrow{\mathbf{r}} / d t\), y la velocidad del objeto en el cuadro S′ por\(\overrightarrow{\mathbf{v}}^{\prime}=d \overrightarrow{\mathbf{r}}^{\prime} / d t^{\prime}\). Dado que la derivada de la posición es la velocidad, las velocidades del objeto en dos marcos de referencia diferentes se relacionan de acuerdo con

A esto se le llama la Ley de Adición de Velocidades.
