Hay dos velocidades diferentes involucradas con la descripción de una ola. En capítulos anteriores vimos que los puntos individuales de una ola oscilan (arriba y abajo para ondas transversales, ida y vuelta para ondas longitudinales) con simple movimiento armónico, al igual que masas en resortes. Pero la velocidad de subida y bajada de un punto en una onda transversal no nos dice qué tan rápido se mueve la ola de un lugar a otro. La velocidad de ola, v, es la rapidez con la que viaja la ola y está determinada por las propiedades del medio.
