La mayoría de los procesos ambientales que actúan cerca de la superficie de la Tierra derivan su energía de los intercambios de calor entre la Tierra y la atmósfera de arriba. Gran parte de este calor proviene de la energía radiante inicialmente proporcionada por la absorción de la radiación solar. La energía absorbida se utiliza para calentar la atmósfera, evaporar el agua, calentar el subsuelo junto con una serie de otros procesos.
