- área de superficie de agua
- volumen de agua
- profundidad máxima
- longitud de la costa
- longitud del lago: es igual a la distancia más corta a través de la superficie del agua entre los puntos más distantes a lo largo de la orilla (Figura 6-2). Esto se vuelve complicado cuando los lagos tienen geometría de superficie complicada.
- anchura del lago: esto es igual a la longitud de una línea perpendicular a la longitud definida anteriormente, en cualquier punto; la respiración media es igual al área dividida por la longitud (Figura 4-2).
En vista en planta, los lagos van desde equidimensionales o irregulares hasta muy alargados. En ciertas situaciones especiales, los lagos son aproximadamente circulares, por ejemplo, los lagos de agua (ver Capítulo 5).
En sección transversal, los lagos suelen ser mucho más anchos que profundos, especialmente los lagos grandes. Los lagos pequeños suelen ser más profundos en relación con su ancho que los lagos grandes.
