Podrán basarse en:
- Material: duro/suave, origen, tamaño;
- Controles tectónicos, por ejemplo, Inman y Nordstrom (1971);
- Criterio del nivel del mar, por ejemplo, Valentin (1952);
- Procesos dominantes.
La diversidad en los sistemas costeros es el resultado de la ocurrencia simultánea de todos los factores determinantes del sistema costero en un número casi infinito de combinaciones. Es por ello que no existe un sistema de clasificación verdaderamente único de los sistemas oceánicos costeros; y es por ello que uno encuentra una gran variedad de sistemas de clasificación en la literatura. La clasificación depende de la escala; la clasificación tectónica, por ejemplo, describe solo las características más amplias de una costa y también en las clasificaciones basadas en procesos los niveles de agregación pueden variar.
La clasificación basada en procesos sobre la base de la importancia relativa del suministro de sedimentos fluviales y la acción de las olas y mareas, se acerca más al enfoque en estas notas de conferencia que discuten las características de los sistemas costeros basados en el forzamiento fronterizo (hidrodinámico) al sistema costero y los procesos de transporte de sedimentos resultantes.
