• Los anillos de núcleo cálido giran masas calientes de agua rodeadas por agua más fría. Ejemplo: Áreas de agua caliente en el Sargazo Agua de mar rodeada de agua fría (Figura 9.14).
• Los anillos de núcleo frío son masas frías de agua rodeadas de agua más cálida.
Estos anillos giratorios pueden durar años y servir como refugios para la vida marina (agua caliente y fría) y pueden influir en el desarrollo de tormentas (como intensificar o reducir la intensidad de los huracanes). Los anillos centrales suelen tener poblaciones biológicas únicas.
