Las olas pueden doblarse cuando encuentran obstáculos o cambios en el fondo del mar.
- La refracción implica doblar. La refracción de olas comienza cuando la base de olas comienza a interactuar con el fondo marino y ralentiza las olas, haciendo que se doblen hacia la costa. La refracción ocurre cuando las olas se acercan a la playa en ángulo (Figura 10.25).
- La difracción implica la dispersión (o dispersión) de la energía de las olas. La difracción de olas se refiere a diversos fenómenos que ocurren cuando una ola encuentra un obstáculo o cambio en la geometría del fondo marino. Por ejemplo, las olas se difractan cuando pasan por una isla, o cuando pasan por un punto u otra estructura, como un embarcadero en la desembocadura de un puerto (Figura 10.26).
- La reflexión (rebote) implica chocar contra una superficie sólida (como un malecón o acantilado) y reflejarse de regreso al mar. La reflexión puede resultar en ondas estacionarias, ondas que se mueven hacia adelante y hacia atrás (oscilan) en una posición vertical, las ondas golpean una obstrucción de frente y luego se reflejan hacia atrás en la dirección de la que provienen.
