Fundada en 670, Kairouan floreció bajo la dinastía aglabí en el siglo IX. A pesar del traslado de la capital política a Túnez en el siglo XII, Kairuán siguió siendo la principal ciudad santa del Magreb. Su rico patrimonio arquitectónico incluye la Gran Mezquita, con sus columnas de mármol y pórfido, y la Mezquita de las Tres Puertas del siglo IX.
