Gary llegó a nuestro círculo ese miércoles. Hicimos planes para pasar el rato después de la reunión. Gary es Oglala Lakota. Es portador de pipas para la gente. Decidimos realizar una ceremonia de pipa para establecer la conexión y unirnos con un solo corazón y mente. Para rezar y conocernos. Bajamos a la playa y encendimos un fuego. Fue una noche clara y cálida. Las estrellas eran brillantes. El fuego crepitaba y las sombras de las llamas rebotaban en el claro cielo nocturno. Me quité los zapatos y sentí la arena fresca y suave debajo de mis pies y entre los dedos de los pies. El océano retumbaba en la distancia. Gary empezó a cavar en su bolsa. La luz del fuego rebotó en sus gafas dando un brillo en sus ojos mientras me daba una pequeña sonrisa. Sacó un tambor de mano. Mi corazón se detuvo. Empezó a cantar una canción. Yo conocía esa canción. Estaba honrando las cuatro direcciones. Mis ojos se empezaron a regar y una ola de emoción me inundó. Miré hacia las estrellas con gratitud. Le pregunté a Gary si me enseñaría y se encogió de hombros.
El humo comenzó a elevarse hacia el cielo. Inhalé profundamente el aroma ahumado y pude sentir la serenidad y propiedad limpiadora de la medicina de salvia. Miré alrededor a toda la gente. Todos me miraban y esperaban. Entonces miré a Gary. Gary sonrió y dijo: “Está bien, todos están esperando, canta”.
