Literalmente, “comprender” es “incluir” o “contener”. La tierra comprende rocas (las incluye), pero las rocas no comprenden la tierra (no la incluyen). Por lo tanto:
La Unión comprende 50 estados.
El conjunto comprende las partes, pero no al revés.
Escritores estrictos dicen que usar “comprender” en lo pasivo (“Un pie está compuesto por 12 pulgadas”) es inaceptable; en cambio, el uso “está compuesto de” o “está compuesto por”.
