Quizás ninguna década esté tan inmortalizada en la memoria estadounidense como la década de 1960. Encajada en la colorida retórica de la paz y el amor, complementada con imágenes agitantes del movimiento de derechos civiles, y recordada con cariño por su música, arte y activismo, la década trajo a muchas personas la esperanza de una nación más inclusiva y con visión de futuro. Pero la década también estuvo plagada de contiendas, tragedias y caos. Fue la década de la guerra de Vietnam, los disturbios del centro de la ciudad y los asesinatos que parecían simbolizar el aplastamiento del idealismo de una nueva generación. Una década de lucha y desilusión sacudida por la agitación social, cultural y política, los años sesenta son recordados porque tanto cambió, y porque tanto no.
