- Así como la literatura refleja la historia, la literatura también refleja los supuestos culturales compartidos por la sociedad en la que se produjo. A menudo las obras del canon occidental ven a los personajes no blancos de formas prejuiciosas que justifican el imperialismo occidental.
- Se pueden entender los mensajes raciales, étnicos o culturales de un texto prestando especial atención a la forma en que se describen grupos de personas, particularmente en contraste con otros grupos.
- Al escribir sobre raza, etnia y colonialismo, utilice fuentes primarias y secundarias para involucrarse plenamente con el contexto histórico del texto. El uso de una mezcla de fuentes primarias y secundarias será clave para escribir a través de la lente del Nuevo Historicismo, una teoría literaria que exploramos en el Capítulo 7.
