En 1915, George A. Maney introdujo el método pendiente-deflexión como uno de los métodos clásicos de análisis de vigas y marcos indeterminados. El método da cuenta de las deformaciones por flexión, pero ignora las deformaciones axiales y cortantes. Así, las incógnitas en el método de análisis pendiente-deflexión son las rotaciones y los desplazamientos relativos de las articulaciones. Para la determinación de los momentos finales de los miembros en la articulación, este método requiere la solución de ecuaciones simultáneas consistentes en rotaciones, desplazamientos articulares, rigidez y longitudes de miembros.
