Los ingenieros de petróleo y gas natural también usan otro término de gravedad que se llama gravedad API. Se utiliza para líquidos (por ejemplo, condensados) y se define como:

Por definición (ver Ecuación 18.3), la gravedad específica del agua es la unidad. Por lo tanto, el agua tiene una gravedad API de 10. La gravedad API de 10 se asocia con aceites muy pesados, casi asfálticos. Los crudos ligeros tienen un API mayor o igual a 45°. Las gravedades del condensado oscilan entre 50° y 70° API. Los condensados líquidos son normalmente de color claro.
