En su nivel más básico, el álgebra abstracta es el estudio de las estructuras. Así como un arquitecto puede examinar edificios o jerarquías sociales antropólogos, un algebraista explora la naturaleza de conjuntos equipados con operaciones binarias que satisfacen ciertas propiedades. Si bien estas estructuras pueden no parecer al principio muy importantes, están en el centro de la mayoría, si no de todos, los esfuerzos matemáticos. A nivel elemental, nos permiten resolver sistemas de ecuaciones; a un nivel más global, están detrás de algunos de nuestros sistemas criptográficos más importantes. ¡Incluso los usamos implícitamente al decir la hora!
