La compañía automotriz Volkswagen (que forma parte del Grupo Volkswagen más grande) indica que su objetivo es “ofrecer vehículos atractivos, seguros y ambientalmente racionales que puedan competir en un mercado cada vez más duro y establecer estándares mundiales en su respectiva clase”. [1]
En septiembre de 2015, la Agencia de Protección al Medio Ambiente anunció que Volkswagen había instalado software especial en sus autos para manipular los niveles de emisiones (haciendo parecer que los autos son menos contaminantes que ellos). Una semana después, Volkswagen dio a conocer que 11 millones de vehículos diésel contenían los dispositivos, y el director general Martin Winterkorn renunció. El precio de las acciones de Volkswagen se hundió —perdiendo el 30 por ciento de su valor durante la noche— y la compañía se apresuró a entender lo que había sucedido y controlar el daño a su reputación.
En los meses siguientes al descubrimiento de los dispositivos engañosos, los investigadores identificaron a un equipo de empleados de Volkswagen que habían tramado el plan y lo implementaron a lo largo de varios años. Una evaluación interna identificó una “cultura de tolerancia” para romper las reglas en la empresa. También salió a la luz que el énfasis de Volkswagen en “resultados a cualquier costo” había contribuido a la violación de las normas éticas. Expertos de la industria creen que la violación de la confianza de los consumidores por parte de la compañía será sumamente difícil de reparar y que puede llevar años reconstruir la marca Volkswagen.
