Presentaremos ahora una interpretación de las propiedades físicas y químicas de los elementos a partir de la descripción orbital atómica de sus estructuras electrónicas. Nuestra discusión sobre las propiedades de los átomos será cualitativa, pero cabe señalar que muchas de las propiedades de los átomos ahora pueden predecirse con precisión mediante cálculos mecánicos cuánticos empleando una versión muy extendida del concepto orbital atómico.
