La energía de Gibbs es una variable de estado extensa definida por la siguiente ecuación.

\[\mathrm{G}=\mathrm{U}+\mathrm{p} \, \mathrm{V}-\mathrm{T} \, \mathrm{S}\]

En lugar de energía Gibbs, a menudo se usan los términos energía libre de Gibbs y función Gibbs. Los físicos prefieren el término función de Gibbs [1]. No se fomenta el término 'energía libre'. La experiencia cotidiana nos dice que ninguna energía es 'libre'.

[1] Sin embargo, el término francés 'entalpía libre' (es decir, entalpía libre)\(\mathrm{G}\) tiene mérito. La entalpía se define por\(\mathrm{H} = \mathrm{ U} + \mathrm{p V}\). Entonces\(\mathrm{G} = \mathrm{ H} – \mathrm{ TS}\). El producto\(\mathrm{TS}\) es la energía ligada en un sistema a partir del cual no se puede producir ningún trabajo. De ahí que la parte disponible o 'libre' de la entalpía es la energía de Gibbs.
