Para documentar la termodinámica de los procesos se ha pactado una convención. En general, la variable termodinámica toma la siguiente forma.

Aquí
- \(\Delta\)señala un cambio es la variable extensiva termodinámica\(\mathrm{X}\);
- el subíndice 'proc' señala el proceso; p.
- \(\mathrm{f} =\)formación
- \(\mathrm{c} =\)combustión
- \(\mathrm{vap} =\)vaporización
- \(\mathrm{r} =\)reacción química
- \(\mathrm{aln} =\)= solución
En reconocimiento a la larga tradición de usar una 'doble daga', un superíndice\(\neq\) indica activación como en la formación de 'estado de transición a partir de reactivos.
- el superíndice '0' significa bajo condiciones estándar que deben definirse. Ejemplo.
- \(\Delta_{\mathrm{c}} \mathrm{H}^{0}=\)entalpía estándar de combustión
- \(\Delta^{\neq} \mathrm{V}^{0}=\)volumen estándar de activación
