Una característica importante de muchas reacciones de eliminación es que ocurren con la misma combinación de reactivos que provocan la sustitución nucleofílica. De hecho, la eliminación y la sustitución suelen ser reacciones competitivas. Por lo tanto, no debería sorprendernos que la sustitución y eliminación tengan mecanismos estrechamente relacionados.
