La pseudoefedrina es un descongestionante de venta libre (OTC) (ver Figura 5.9 [1]). Se describen más detalles sobre la pseudoefedrina en el capítulo “Sistema nervioso autónomo”.
Mecanismo de Acción
La pseudoefedrina actúa directamente sobre los receptores adrenérgicos y actúa indirectamente liberando norepinefrina de sus sitios de almacenamiento. El medicamento produce vasoconstricción, que encoge las membranas mucosas nasales.
Indicaciones de Uso
Los descongestionantes alivian la obstrucción nasal debida a la inflamación.
Consideraciones de enfermería durante toda la vida útil
Este medicamento no es seguro para niños menores de 4 años.
Adversos/Efectos secundarios
Los adversos/efectos secundarios comunes incluyen hipertensión, disritmia, mareos, dolor de cabeza, insomnio e inquietud. Algunos pacientes pueden experimentar visión borrosa, tinnitus, opresión torácica, nariz seca y congestión nasal.
Los descongestionantes están contraindicados en pacientes con hipertensión severa, enfermedad arterial coronaria (CAD), glaucoma de ángulo estrecho y algún uso de antidepresivos. También, usar con precaución en pacientes con disritmias cardíacas, hipertiroidismo, DM (diabetes mellitus), hipertrofia prostática y glaucoma. [2]
Enseñanza y educación del paciente
Los pacientes deben tener cuidado de seguir las recomendaciones de dosificación. Si se superan los estándares de dosificación, algunos pacientes pueden experimentar efectos secundarios como aumento del nerviosismo, dificultades respiratorias, cambios en la frecuencia cardíaca y alucinaciones. [3]
