Mecanismo de Acción
Los expectorantes reducen la viscosidad de las secreciones tenaces al irritar los receptores vagales gástricos que estimulan el líquido del tracto respiratorio, aumentando así el volumen pero disminuyendo la viscosidad de las secreciones del tracto respiratorio.
Indicación de uso
Los expectorantes se utilizan para una tos productiva y para aflojar la mucosidad de las vías respiratorias.
Consideraciones de enfermería durante toda la vida
El medicamento es seguro para todas las edades. La guaifenesina solo se recomienda para su uso durante el embarazo y la lactancia cuando el beneficio supera el riesgo.
Adversos/Efectos secundarios
La guaifenesina puede causar sarpullido en la piel, dolor de cabeza, náuseas y vómitos. [1]
Enseñanza y educación del paciente
Los pacientes deben tener cuidado de evitar irritantes que estimulen su tos. Adicionalmente, el medicamento puede causar somnolencia. Los pacientes deben evitar tomarlos con otros depresores del SNC o alcohol. [2]
