Hay una cabeza bien definida que contiene el cerebro, los principales órganos de los sentidos y la boca, un tronco que contiene los otros órganos y una cola bien desarrollada. Otras características de los vertebrados pueden ser menos aparentes. Por ejemplo, los vertebrados que viven en la tierra han desarrollado un cuello flexible que está ausente en los peces donde estaría en el camino de las agallas e interferiría con la racionalización. Los mamíferos pero no otros vertebrados tienen una lámina muscular llamada diafragma que divide el tronco en la región torácica o tórax y abdomen.
