La mayoría de los vertebrados tienen una sola cavidad corporal, pero en los mamíferos el diafragma divide la cavidad principal en una cavidad torácica y una abdominal. En la cavidad torácica el corazón y los pulmones están rodeados por sus propias membranas de manera que se crean cavidades alrededor del corazón -la cavidad pericárdica, y alrededor de los pulmones- la cavidad pleural (ver diagrama 4.13).
