Así como las diversas partes de la célula trabajan juntas para realizar las funciones de la célula y un gran número de células similares conforman un tejido, tantos tejidos diferentes pueden “cooperar” para formar un órgano que realiza una función particular. Por ejemplo, los tejidos conectivos, los tejidos epiteliales, el tejido muscular y el tejido nervioso se combinan para hacer el órgano que llamamos el estómago. A su vez el estómago se combina con otros órganos como los intestinos, el hígado y el páncreas para formar el sistema digestivo (ver diagrama 4.14).
