El hígado es el órgano visceral más grande del cuerpo, representando aproximadamente 1-4% del peso corporal total, dependiendo de la especie (3-4% en carnviores y 1-2% en herbívoros). El hígado está dispuesto en distintos lóbulos, cada uno de los cuales está recubierto por una fina capa translúcida de mesotelio (cápsula de Glisson). El número de lóbulos hepáticos varía entre las diferentes especies. Los caninos y felinos tienen cinco lóbulos hepáticos y los herbívoros tienen cuatro lóbulos hepáticos. El número de lóbulos hepáticos no representa función pero es un reflejo de la diversificación de especies.
