Cristales hexagonales de color rojo oscuro con extremos romos. El cristal es prominente dentro del glóbulo rojo, o puede encontrarse extra-celularmente. Por lo general, solo está presente un cristal por célula individual. Los cristales de hemoglobina C rara vez se encuentran, ya que el bazo los eliminará de la circulación, aunque los pacientes que se han sometido a una esplenectomía tienen numerosos cristales de hemoglobina C presentes en su frotis de sangre periférica.
