Identificar las principales estructuras externas del sistema de brotes, incluyendo los nódulos, entrenudos, hojas, yemas axilares y brotes axilares.
Los tallos de las plantas, ya sea por encima o por debajo del suelo, se caracterizan por la presencia de nodos e entrenudos (Figura\(\PageIndex{1}\)). Los nodos son puntos de unión para las hojas. Las hojas suelen consistir en una región delgada que se adhiere al tallo (el pecíolo) y una hoja más ancha (ver Hojas). La región madre entre dos nodos se llama entrenudo. Un brote axilar generalmente se encuentra en la axila —el área entre la base de una hoja y el tallo— donde puede dar lugar a una rama llamada brote axilar (Figura\(\PageIndex{2}\)). El ápice del brote en la punta del brote contiene el meristemo apical del brote rodeado de hojas en desarrollo llamadas primordios foliares (ver Meristemas).
