Los tallos pueden variar en longitud desde unos pocos milímetros hasta cientos de metros, y también varían en diámetro, dependiendo del tipo de planta. Los tallos suelen estar sobre el suelo, aunque los tallos modificados de algunas plantas, como la papa, también crecen bajo tierra. Los tallos pueden ser herbáceos (blandos) o leñosos por naturaleza. Un tallo puede estar sin ramificar, como el de una palmera, o puede ser altamente ramificado, como el de un árbol de magnolia.
El tallo de la planta funciona en soporte, conducción, fotosíntesis y almacenamiento. Los tallos soportan hojas, flores y capullos. Conectan las raíces con las hojas, ayudando a transportar el agua absorbida y los minerales a diferentes partes de la planta. También ayuda a transportar los productos de la fotosíntesis, es decir, los azúcares, desde las hojas hasta el resto de la planta. Los tallos también almacenan alimentos para la planta, principalmente en forma de almidón.
