Las propuestas de Wilson para la autodeterminación también fueron ignoradas cuando Gran Bretaña y Francia dividieron el Medio Oriente entre ellos en lugar de otorgar a los árabes su prometida independencia del desmembrado Imperio Otomano turco. En cambio, Gran Bretaña y Francia establecieron colonias de facto con fronteras artificiales que dividen poblaciones y ponen a grupos beligerantes en el mismo país. En el acuerdo Sykes-Picot, Gran Bretaña se llevó a Palestina, Jordania e Irak, mientras que Francia se llevó a Siria y Líbano. Esto puso en marcha muchos de los conflictos que existen hoy en día. Por ejemplo, Gran Bretaña formó Irak a partir de tres provincias disímiles de chiitas, sunitas y kurdos, y puso a cargo a un rey que nunca había estado allí. Además, la Declaración Balfour de Gran Bretaña apoyó el concepto de un estado judío en medio de un Medio Oriente abrumadoramente musulmán.
