| El estatus Identidad-Difusión es un estatus que caracteriza a quienes no han explorado las opciones, ni se han comprometido con una identidad. | El individuo no tiene compromisos firmes respecto a los temas en cuestión y no está avanzando hacia ellos. Aquellos que persisten en esta identidad pueden derivar sin rumbo fijo con poca conexión con quienes los rodean o tener poco sentido de propósito en la vida. |
| El estado de identidad-ejecución hipotecaria es el estatus de aquellos que se han comprometido con una identidad sin haber explorado las opciones. | El individuo no se ha dedicado a ninguna experimentación de identidad y ha establecido una identidad basada en las elecciones o valores de los demás. Algunos padres pueden tomar estas decisiones por sus hijos y no le dan al adolescente la oportunidad de tomar decisiones. En otros casos, los adolescentes pueden identificarse fuertemente con los padres y otras personas en su vida y desean seguir sus pasos. |
| El estatus de Identidad-Moratoria es un estatus que describe a aquellos que están explorando en un intento de establecer una identidad pero que aún no han hecho ningún compromiso. | El individuo está explorando diversas opciones pero aún no ha hecho un compromiso claro con ninguna de ellas. Este puede ser un período de tiempo ansioso y emocionalmente tenso ya que el adolescente experimenta con diferentes roles y explora diversas creencias. Nada es seguro y hay muchas preguntas, pero pocas respuestas. |
| El estado de identidad-logro se refiere al estatus de quienes, después de la exploración, han hecho un compromiso. | El individuo ha alcanzado una identidad coherente y comprometida basada en decisiones personales. Este es un proceso largo y no suele lograrse al final de la adolescencia |
