Debido a que el potencial es un escalar en lugar de un vector, los potenciales suelen ser más fáciles de calcular que las fortalezas de campo. En efecto, para calcular el campo gravitacional, a veces es más fácil primero calcular el potencial y luego calcular el gradiente del potencial.
